You might expect to find civil war memorabilia in estate sales along the east coast or at least in the states where the battles took place. But some of the best finds can be found in the most unexpected places. Take for example the sea trunk, naval sword and epaulets belonging to Union Navy Captain Robert Townsend recently discovered in a Colorado estate sale.

Estate sale find uncovers past of Civil War sailor

When antique dealers Mike and Gretchen Graham arrived at a Broadmoor neighborhood estate sale February 11, they found Townsend’s sea trunk, a naval sword, and his epaulets in their original tin box. They bought the collection that same day and dove into researching the gunboat captain’s intriguing history. . .

The Graham's plan to consign their estate sale find to the third annual West Point auction, to be held in a Hotel Thayer on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point,. N.Y. scheduled for August 18-19 2012
